What the Work Shows
For CivicAction, CANCEA used its agent-based modelling platform to simulate mental-health issues across the GTHA labour force and connect them with demographic and economic outcomes. The work considered mood, anxiety, psychotic and substance-use disorders, together with everyday pressures such as housing, transportation, precarious work, childcare and caregiving.
The analysis estimated that about 680,000 people—roughly 21% of the GTHA labour force—were experiencing a mental-health challenge at the time of the study, while about 1.5 million workers had experienced a mental-health issue at some point in their lives.
Why It Matters
The case demonstrates the value of modelling mental health in context: workplace outcomes are connected to the broader pressures people and families face outside the workplace.
